On Wednesday, JCPR gained two new fully qualified Fire Marshals in the shape of Georgie and Ryan following four grueling hours of vigorous training. Baz, take note.

The training was delivered by the St John Ambulance and it was extremely interesting as I’m sure Georgie would agree. During the course we watched a number of videos that demonstrated how quickly fire can spread (10m per second to be precise), spent some time identifying fire hazards, learnt about fire risk assessment and most importantly how to handle a fire extinguisher should the need arise.

Some alarming fire related stats*:

• Number of calls UK fire and rescue services attended: 860,000
• Number of false alarms: 436,000
• Cost to the UK economy of fire incidents: £7 billion
• Cost of arson related fires: £3 billion
• Percentage of serious fires caused by arson: 50%
• Arson attacks per week: 2,213
• Number of workplace related fires attended by UK fire and rescue services: 11,900

*all statistics have been calculated from a four year average

Strangely, one of the biggest causes of fire in the UK is charging your phone overnight, so if you do it, stop it!

Also, the Fire Brigade offers a free fire risk assessment service so you can ensure your home; if necessary they’ll also fit a free fire alarm for you. Get involved!
