Without wanting to sound like a vintage episode of Wish You Were Here, I thought it would be remiss of me not to blog from my latest business trip to the exotic Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. I’ve ventured out here with my client to recce several venues for an event we’re planning in December. Having never been to the Middle East before, I knew this was going to be an experience and I have not been disappointed. I’m currently staying in the Yas Hotel, am amphibious gem situated half on water, half on land and sat directly atop the Yas Marina Circuit used for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the past two years running.
Today we ‘did’ the GP circuit, getting a brilliant tour of literally every facility possible – I honestly don’t think there’s a racing car combination I’ve not seen in the past few hours. We also went to visit one of the other jewels in the crown of Yas Island – Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The biggest indoor theme park in the world is an unbelievable experience, and one that can’t be done in any other way than simply coming to see it for yourself. Bigger than I could comprehend despite a detailed visit – bear in mind my only point of theme park reference is either Blackpool Pleasure Beach or Alton Towers – this is an entirely different kettle of theme park fish. I can confirm that the world’s faster rollercoaster – the Formula Rossa is amazing. You don’t even have time to scream/faint/cry it’s that fast. Less is more is just not in the Abu Dhabi vocabulary.
So, I’m currently sat on the balcony overlooking the track and the impressive dome shape of the hotel (see below picture). I’m up working late given I’m still on UK time and can’t really sleep, but with a working environment like the one in the picture, I really cannot complain.
